Name Background
Thomas King Meyrick May 18, 1763 - December 22, 1845
This picture of Thomas King Meyrick was apparently painted on the wall of his butcher shop in Presteigne, Wales. You will note he is wearing a butcher's apron over his suit and a hat with a sloping body which according to the Oxford dictionary, was common in the eighteenth century. (This type of hat was the direct ancestor of the modern top hat). Thus his clothing might argue that Thomas King Meyrick was a prosperous business man, probably with an extensive meat trade in Presteigne and the surrounding area.
From his portly appearance -- which was not at all unfashionable in the late 1700's -- and from evidence indicating that he and his wife Cassandra (Stanton) Meyrick had some sixteen children, we might conclude that here was a man who enjoyed life's pleasures to the fullest and, at the same time, managed a profitable business. All of us in my generation are fifth generation descendants of this man who was born in 1763.
